Today we’d like to introduce you to Amryn Soldier.

Amryn, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had always been interested in the arts and as a child begged my mother to buy me art supplies and disposable cameras. My interest in photography began more seriously at sixteen. I spent most of my time in my school’s darkroom: including free class periods and my lunch hour. I immersed myself in photography with the help of teachers who introduced me to different photography concepts and friends who were always willing and enthusiastic models. I also began to book paid sessions and saw photography as a career opportunity. I decided to pursue an Art degree at UNC Asheville and concentrated most of my senior thesis series on alternative process photography methods and self-portraiture. I graduated cum laude from the UNC Asheville honors program earning the Leadership in Arts Award, All – Academic Athletic Award, and the International Tennis Association Scholar Athlete Award.

Most recently, I was invited to be a part of Arts Suzhou 2017 as an exhibiting artist at the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre and speaker at the global press conference in Suzhou, China. I will also be a presenter at the Alternative Process International Symposium in Santa Fe, New Mexico this September demonstrating my process of combining alternative process photography techniques. My photographs have been published in a number of print and online publications such as Sugar Hill & Suwanee Life Magazines, Persephone’s Daughters, The Southern Regional Honors Council, as well as a number of literary magazines. My most noteworthy achievement was delivering a TEDx talk on overcoming fears in artistic endeavors. I have also exhibited photographs locally and internationally in the S. Tucker Cook Gallery, the YMI Cultural Center, Owen Hall Flood Gallery, the Jinji Lake Art Gallery, The Hudgens Center for the Arts, and the Highsmith Art and Intercultural Gallery.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Finding ways to monetize your skills as an artist is challenging because it is difficult to find the type of work you are best suited to perform. The most basic aspect of photography that I find most appealing is the use of light and mood. In each category of work that I create whether it is commercial work or otherwise, it is important to focus on the qualities of the profession I find the most inspiring. Creating a career out of a passion is difficult because anyone working in a creative field wants to do so because they enjoy the nature of their work. I have realized that just because photography is my passion does not mean that it won’t ever feel like “work” it just means that if I focus on the aspects of it I love then it’s still worth it.

Please tell us about Amryn Soldier Photography.
I’m in the business of memories! I’m known for my portraiture and wedding work. I specialize in natural and candid moments focusing on light and emotions. I also work with different alternative process methods in my own work.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I somehow received a do over I would have been more adventurous in the techniques I experimented with to broaden my knowledge of photography styles. Fortunately, it’s never too late!
